Give Your Decor a Surprise Pop of Futuristic Color

b2ap3_thumbnail_Houzz-panel-ICFF-2015.jpgRecently I was invited to be one of three Houzz panelists at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) held at the Javits Center in New York City. As panelists, we answered design questions from International Interior Design Education Conference attendees as part of their Continuing Education Unit.

If you’re not familiar with Houzz, I definitely recommend checking it out. Houzz is a wonderful online design community featuring the work of thousands of interior designers, architects, builders and other home professionals. You can find me here:

The furniture fair was interesting and lots of fun. I’d describe the contemporary furniture on display as “futuristic,” which underscores the event’s tagline of “inspired evolution.” A perfect example is the red saucer-shaped chair below. Unusual in design, it was actually a very comfortable piece of furniture.

While the vignettes were primarily neutral in color, most featured a boldly-colored standout piece that popped in the setting, allowing the individuality of the piece to take center stage. You can see how effective this was with the red chair above and also with the unique pillows below, which had lots of personality and dimension that included red petals and rhinestones.

The beehive-shaped floor lamps below are another great example of the type of contemporary design at the show. As with these lamps, brass is big and creates a wonderful contrast to the soft settings in which they were shown.

The basic theme behind many designers’ vignettes was to showcase a neutral room with a surprise pop of vividly-colored ultra-contemporary style. What will the surprise be in your décor?
