Undersized Bathroom, Oversized Functionality and Beauty

b2ap3_thumbnail_Sheila---Bathroom-corner-vanity.jpgA small bathroom doesn't have to cramp your style. With a little remodeling and some good interior design, you can have all the functionality and beauty you need with plenty of elbow room. One of my bathroom projects is a perfect example of that.

A client asked me to update and redesign their 125 sq. ft. bathroom, making it more efficient and increasing their storage space. The room already had an oversized spa tub, undersized shower, and inadequate storage space, all of which presented plenty of challenges, especially since the homeowner wanted to keep the spa tub. The first thing we needed to do was create enough room to enlarge the shower, but since there were no adjoining spaces to borrow from, we had to create space within this small footprint.

The spa tub had unnecessary cumbersome, wide decking; removing it and pushing the tub closer to the wall gave us plenty of room to replace the small standard shower with a state-of-the-art steam shower with every bell and whistle. By angling the shower door, we also added to the remaining floor space.

We designed a corner vanity to fit into a previously unused corner and wall of the bathroom and included a corner drawer unit between the two vessel sinks. To increase the storage space even further, we also added an upper corner cabinet.

Since the homeowners wanted a dramatic, monochromatic and updated look, we decided on walnut stained and glazed cherry cabinets and matching crown and trim moldings, creating flow and continuity.

We brought in subtle yet interesting patterns with five different sizes and shapes of tile, used proportionally in different areas of the room. Listello tile of river rock in copper and bronze metallic frames the mirrors and wraps around the entire room to create a unifying horizontal pattern.

We topped things off with a touch of contemporary whimsy in the bronze chandelier, which is echoed in oil rubbed bronze hardware, all of which draws color from the listello tile.

Comfort, serenity and sophistication now blend together, making this once outdated, impractical bathroom much more than just a utilitarian space. If you have a similarly small space you'd like to make more efficient and attractive, a little reimagining just may do the trick!
