Kitchen Design for Today and Tomorrow
Today’s kitchen is far more than just functional, it's a major part of your home’s style. It's the hub of the home; the place where we spend a lot of time preparing for holidays and family gatherings, not to mention everyday meals. And because it’s such an important room, our guests often join us there.
But there’s even more to this central room - the look and functionality of your kitchen can make or break the future sale of your home, as well as add or deduct from its value. So it’s common sense to treat your kitchen with the same couture design as you would the rest of your house.
When you decide to update your kitchen, consider looking ahead at the design trends to come. I designed the kitchen over a decade ago, and because it was ahead of its time, it’s in perfect fashion today. At that time, seamless integration of appliances like the dishwasher, refrigerator, and freezer with cabinetry wasn’t common, but it’s all the rage now and probably will be for quite some time.
By choosing outside-the-box couture, your kitchen will be in fashion longer – as long as the basic styles you choose are timeless and work with your family’s lifestyle. Keep in mind that there’s a difference between classic designs that are ahead of their time and flat-out funky designs, which will run their course quickly and leave you stuck with yet another makeover project too soon.
Whether your kitchen will be used by just the two of you or a family of five, which is the case with the kitchen you see here, think about using stain-resistant fabric on your chairs. Everyone has accidents - and the more people who use your kitchen, the more of a chance there is for a spill – but you can avoid the time-consuming cleanup and possible permanent staining if you plan ahead.
Carefree Style and Elegance
Before you recoil at the image of old-fashioned plastic-looking coverings, take a look at the selection of stain-resistant fabrics available today. Sunbrella fabrics, for example, repel spills and can be cleaned easily. They’re trendy, contemporary, classic, and in no way betray their functionality. These fabrics have a lush look and comfortable feel, and they’ll pay for themselves over and over again every time a red wine or marinara sauce spill doesn’t leave a permanent discoloration. Without the worry about staining, you can choose lighter colors freely.
A desk area is a great asset to a modern family’s kitchen. This space can act as the social hub of your home, where your telephone, laptop, and calendar can stay out of the way of food preparation while conveniently giving you a place to make appointments and social engagements; you'll have everything you need right at your fingertips. But you can take this a step further and add built-in outlets inside the desk drawer for charging electronic devices while keeping them off the desk and eliminating clutter.
These are just a few ideas; use your own creativity to come up with new, innovative ways to make your couture kitchen write a page from the future. You never know – you may just be on the cutting edge of the next big thing in interior design!
